The city of Mission Viejo is located in southern Orange County, California in the Saddleback Valley and has been named the Safest City in the United States according to data from a 2007 FBI study. Mission Viejo is one of the largest master planned communities ever built under a single project in the United States. The city had a 2008 total population of 100,013. The city's name is a reference to Rancho Mission Viejo, a large Spanish land grant from which the community was founded.
Although there are a number of offices and businesses within its city limits, Mission Viejo is mainly residential. It features a regional mall, a two-year community college and a large number of single family homes and condos.
Mission Viejo has many recreational areas such as the recently remodeled Norman P. Murry Community and Senior Center. There are about two parks per square mile. The city has three golf courses, Casta del Sol Golf Course, The Mission Viejo Country Club and the Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club. Lake Mission Viejo is at the center of the city and is a private association for Mission Viejo residents with beaches, swimming, fishing, sailing, party boat rentals, summer concerts and much more. A spectacular fireworks display is given every July 4th.
Serving as the area's regional trauma center, Mission Hospital is the largest hospital in south Orange County. Providing outstanding care for children, it also offers one of two CHOC (Children's Hospital of Orange County) locations and is a critical asset to the region. It has recently undergone a large campus expansion, which includes a new in-patient hospital tower, emergency services and medical office/conference space. Other medical facilities and offices have been built around the hospital. It is located conveniently about half a mile from the freeway near Crown Valley Parkway and the I-5 Freeway.
